This usage reflects the original sense of ''nominative'' (Latin ''nominativus'', Greek ''onomastikée'' 'naming form'). It is especially common in Caucasian linguistics, which have [[ergative construction]]s, and whose citation form would therefore qualify as an [[absolutive case]].
