Speech was synthesised by converting patterns (stylised [[spectrogram]]s) painted on acetate film loops into acoustic signals by a photoelectric system. The synthesiser was used to systematically vary the [[acoustic parameters]] of speech to determine the cues used in [[speech perception]].&lt;br /&gt;
