The [[perceptual mechanism]] is able to supply speech [[sound]]s that are missing in the [[signal]]. When the speech signal is interrupted by another sound (noise, e.g. such as someone coughing), speech remains audible because the perceptual mechanism restores the speech fragment. Audio demonstrations show that phoneme restoration occurs when a [[phoneme]] is replaced by noise, but also that the phoneme is not restored in case the phoneme is replaced by silence.<br />
