A quick search on Google suggests that there is much terminological confusion - see, for instance, the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym - with "initialism" a competing term (though I was previously blissfully ignorant of this term as well). "Alphabetism" seems more frequent in other senses, at least judging by the first few pages of hits I got for it on Google."
