Im Verlauf eines semantischen Generalisierungsprozesses, können Sprachzeichen semantische Merkmale verlieren. Diesen Ablauf nennt man oft „semantisches Ausbleichen“. So kann z.B. ein Nomen seine Bedeutung wandeln, von einer spezifischeren, hin zu einer allgemeinen Bedeutung.
