Peter Ladefoged (September 17, 1925 – January 24, 2006) was the foremost phonetician of his generation, who studied the sounds of languages from around the world.

Life
Ladefoged was born in Sutton, Surrey (England). He studied in Cambridge and Edinburgh. He taught at UCLA from 1962 till his retirement in 1991. He died in London on his way home from a fieldtrip to India.
