A clause is a syntactic units consisting of a predicate, its arguments, and its modifiers. The clause is perhaps the most basic unit of syntax.

Synonym

The term sentence is often used as a synonym of clause, but often it is used in a slightly different sense ('maximal clause', i.e. a clause that is not part of another clause).
