The dative case is a case that prototypically marks the recipient of ditransitive verbs of transfer such as 'give'.

The term dative goes back to antiquity. It is derived from Latin (cāsus) datīvus 'case of giving' (cf. dare 'give', which itself is a calque of Greek (ptóòsis) dotikée.
