(minimalist theory) operation by which a phrase-marker K1 is inserted in a designated position phi in a phrase-marker K, such that the resulting phrase-marker K* satisfies X-bar theory. If the phrase-marker K1 is already part of the phrase-marker K (but distinct from phi), GT instantiates what is known as 'move alpha'.
