Object is a complement which is selected and directly governed by a lexical head.
The term object is sometimes used as a general term for a non-subject argument.
Comments
Using the terms direct object and indirect object as independent terms is quite common; these terms do not necessarily imply that one assumes a general category object of which they are subtypes.
