Intrinsic allophone

An intrinsic allophone is one that is generated by the coarticulatory effects of neighbouring sounds. E.g. the lateral release of /t/ when followed by an /l/, since it is impossible to release /t/ centrally without producing an intervening sound. The same allophonic distribution can be expected to occur universally in all languages.
