One of the central notions in GB theory referring to the assumption that all syntactic relations, whether created by movement or by binding, should be local, that is, should not exceed a certain length or distance. Binding, government, the ECP and the notions of Barrier and Minimality all serve the purpose of enforcing locality on syntactic relations.
