On-line

Term used in auditory word recognition. Recognition tasks are either on-line or off-line: the task is called on-line when the recognition process itself is under investigation, and not just the result of the recognition process. The task taps into the recognition process to find out which lexical candidates are competing and where exactly the word is recognised.
Example
A technique which is assumed to be on-line is e.g. Crossmodal semantic priming.
