The perceptual mechanism is able to supply speech sounds that are missing in the signal. When the speech signal is interrupted by another sound (noise, e.g. such as someone coughing), speech remains audible because the perceptual mechanism restores the speech fragment. Audio demonstrations show that phoneme restoration occurs when a phoneme is replaced by noise, but also that the phoneme is not restored in case the phoneme is replaced by silence.
